The original Agritrax website used RESOURCE21's satellite imagery (video)and specialized analysis to provide Ag retailers and their grower customers with precise, accurate and affordable information about how crops were performing in the field. Satellite images were used to monitor actual field information to provide farmers with information on crop nutrient management, yield tracking and plant growth management. This field of study is called Remote Sensing (farming.mov). We will be exploring the topics of remote sensing, Tree Growth, and review some common Open Source Programs that are helping Ag farmers make enlightened decisions. Growth is in the details of farming. Satellite pictures are able to show which plants have too much or too little soil moisture; where there is a nutrient deficiency in a crops; and where emerging weed, insect and disease outbreaks are taking place. Affordable 10-meter resolution makes it possible to easily and accurately identify field boundaries and isolate crop conditions within a field. When you can look at an image and see the boundary of each field, it immediately makes the image more useful. It allows imagery to become a critical component that will drive the value of precision agriculture. On a side note: Resoure21 was shut down in 2003 at a loss of $47 million charge to Boeing (which controlled 63 percent of Resource21) for its investment. EarthMap Solutions (EMS) now has exclusive intellectual rights to the AgroWatch suite of information products from DigitalGlobe, as well as the AgSense information systems from Boeing. Other topics that will be covered will be advances in the Wireless Agriculture Network. An example of this technology may be found at Wagnet.
